Our Lady of Sorrows, Our Lady of Dolours, Sorrowful Mother, Mother of Sorrows, mater dolorosa, Our Lady of Piety, Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, Our Lady of the Seven Dolours are titles by which Mary, mother of Jesus, is referred to in her sorrows. A subject for Marian art in the Catholic Church, and a popular religious theme for a Roman Catholic devotion. In Christian imagery, the Virgin Mary is portrayed sorrowful, with one or seven long knives like daggers, piercing her. Devotional prayers are meditations based on the prophecy of Simeon. Novenas like Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows, the Seven Joys of Mary, and Reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Liturgical feast day is September 15, the Friday of Sorrows in some Catholic Countries.
